The Bhaer Necessities: What to Pack for a National Tour, Finale

Writer's picture: Mychal LeverageMychal Leverage

Well friends, here we are: I'm about to pack up and set off for our final leg of the Little Women tour. It still feels strange that we're approaching the end when I feel we've barely begun. I'll have to remember to enjoy the rest of my time on the road and take it all in, as I'm not sure if I'll realistically get to do this ever again.

Regrettably, dear reader, I don't have much to report by way of how my packing has changed. With my dog-bed-bus-hammock, my collapsible cooler/Tupperware/coffee cup, my desktop humidifier, I'm, well, kinda crushing it. I've become very content with my living simply the last two months, and have found a quiet joy in living off the bare essentials. I'll happily notify you about the minor swaps I've made, but I promise to one day talk about the practical applications with a "day in the life" sort of post.

As far as replacing or replenishing items in my suitcase, there's not much of a difference since my last update when I left for Miami. I have all my same clothes, plus a few novelty shirts I picked up on the road. Actually, I was incredibly optimistic that I was leaving winter behind, and had nothing but warm and sunny days to look forward to, but I was sorely mistaken. When the lovely Heidi came to see the show in Binghamton, I begged her to also bring up my winter coat and gloves so I wouldn't freeze to death. I'm grateful that she did because we were hit by a snowstorm on day two of being in town. I may have to pack my winter garb once again since the forecast is low 30's in Colorado Springs. For our warmer cities, I'll make sure the poofy coat doesn't go to waste and use it as a bus pillow. It feels strange having to pack for sandy beaches and also prepare for snowy forests, but hey, that's the tour life.

My sources for entertainment are all the same, including my handy-dandy Nintendo Switch and first gen Kindle. I also finally, finally finished reading the brick that is The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, and tentatively plan on continuing The Wheel of Time after the tour wraps. I did like having one long book to sink my teeth into, so I'm hopping onto the bandwagon (or, uh, sandwagon... bandworm?) and plan to start reading Dune in California. I've seen Dune: Part Two in theaters twice now, and want to explore Arrakis a little bit further. At 884 pages, I have my work cut out for me, so I'll also be bringing a non-fiction palate cleanser, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. We're looking out for Post-Tour-Mychal's professional well-being, and that means finally writing that play he's been talking about forever; let's hope this is the writing book to end all writing books.

This final stretch of the tour, our Dungeons & Dragons campaign will commence at long last: a ragtag group of unlikely musicians and actors traversing a Wizard-hating regime. As a novice, I was very kindly gifted a D&D Player's Handbook, a deck of Cleric spell cards, and custom resin dice by our Dungeon Master to properly prepare for our quest, so they simply have to come along. My roommate and I are also still hoping to teach our cast and crew how to play Magic, so I've once again swapped out my roster of Commander decks with some that will be a little more accessible to new players.

That's it! The funny thing about leg two was that most of my time on the bus and in the hotels was spent sleeping, but when we stayed in one city for longer stretches, I always made the effort to go out and explore. Lexington, Kentucky, is the epicenter of art and culture in America because they have a coffee shop that sells Pokémon cards. In California and Colorado and Illinois, who knows what else I'll discover? Here's looking forward to grander cities with exciting sites and more to do, anything to draw me in and get me out of my hotel room.

And scene.
