"To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often."

Winston Churchill

I've never had a New Year's resolution that survived by February. Hard to be optimistic and stick to it, considering that I've had the same resolution for the better part of a decade: going to the gym. After days and days of eating salty ham, mashed calories, and snacking on holiday cookies every waking moment, January always feels like a great time to do some crunches.

I've stopped believing in waiting for December 31st to improve your life. I believe that we are all doing the best we can, and we should actively work on being just a little bit better everyday. I actually started exercising more rigorously in August of last year, and I had a brief stint where I went to the gym every day for two weeks. The streak ended when my body threatened a complete shutdown if I didn't take a day off to rest and recover. I'm sure we all know too well how one day off becomes two days off, becomes three, becomes a week, and before you know it, you're starting over again.

This year, I think I'm finally going about it the right way. It's taken four months of troubleshooting to work out a full body routine that I actually enjoy, spread over four days, and I am exercising every other day no matter what. I'm grateful for the website and blog to keep me honest and dedicated going forward.

In the spirit of improving every day, I do badly want to work on my communication. When faced with a stressful situation, I have a horrid habit of shutting off and retreating until the problem resolves itself or goes away. I'm going to be better about making myself heard, saying how I'm feeling, and facing my troubles head on. I hope that you, dear reader, are taking steps to improve your life this year should you feel you need it. Either way, I'm in your corner, hoping you can make 2024 a good one.

With the prologue out of the way, the lovely Heidi and I are back in New Jersey! We flew back from Arizona on the 3rd and have been slowly readjusting ourselves to normal life. We actually made it just in time for the first snow of winter; for three days, those two-faced meteorologists promised us the biggest storm in years, but we had doubts that it would snow at all, let alone we'd get a storm. Nevertheless, here it is, as slushy as ever!

What else, what else... to slap a bow on our Christmas movie binge in December, Heidi shared Love Actually with me on our flight back to Jersey. I, having never seen it, thought it was very cute and will for sure be adding it to the rotation next Christmas. We're also ticking off Starkid musicals on YouTube one by one, and we just watched The Trail to Oregon!. You guys, after nearly a year of marriage, sooooo many of Heidi's jokes and catchphrases finally make sense to me.

As promised, I did get around to reading Fences by August Wilson and Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, and even found time to reread Fat Ham by James Ijames. I did say I wanted to slow down and read fewer plays, but get off my back, one resolution at a time. I came home from the city on Saturday with a bag of a dozen plays from the library, but hey, at least I grabbed fewer than my usual haul. I probably won't have time this week to chip away at the pile, but I'll continue reading my first novel of 2024, On the Road by Jack Kerouac.

To everyone eagerly awaiting my big announcement, I'm afraid I have to infuriate you. I unfortunately have to wait a few more days before I can make a public announcement of my own. I'm optimistic that you can expect to hear about it by Friday if not sooner, but do make sure that you're subscribed so you can know right away.

Thanks so much to everyone for sticking around to the end, have a Happy New Year!

And scene.
