"Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night."
William Blake
My routine has been established! In the throes of going in for Little Women rehearsals, I've been consistently getting up each day at 7:00 AM (snoozing until 7:30, you know how it is). I'll take the fur baby Atticus for a walk, have a cup of coffee and a bowl of yogurt, pack my lunch, and take the 8:26 train to get to Penn Station by about 9:00 AM. As long as the trains are running on time, that leaves me an hour to stop by the library, run over my lines, warm up, and of course get that overpriced cup of coffee to prevent the 3 o'clock slump. I've also been going to the gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, getting plenty of extra exercise in between by walking around the city.
This last week of rehearsals absolutely flew by. Monday and Tuesday, we set the blocking for the entirety of Act Two and even had time to get in a run-through. Wednesday, we went back to Act One and put it all together for two full run-throughs on Thursday and Friday. We ended up having an invited rehearsal for family and friends who wouldn't be able to visit any of the tour stops, so Heidi got to see the show early! As well as she knows Little Women, she was surprised and "delighted" by the uniqueness of our take on the story. Characters and songs that she normally thinks are just okay really stood out and impressed. I'm excited to reunite with her for our stint in California with the rest of our family, maybe even some of our East Coast shows!
I'll talk more about it in future posts, but Professor Bhaer is quickly becoming an all time favorite role. Looking back on how I approached material in high school and even right out of college, I was doing inauthentic impressions of other actors, replicating what I thought was good acting. After two years of pondering the art of performance, I've found a great joy in putting myself into the part, treating the Professor like a change of clothing instead of copying someone else. I've found a quiet, simple, naturalistic approach to the role, and it's a great joy to play him on stage. It's a part that I would be willing and eager to return to in the future.
Later today, we have a short meeting about what to expect on the road, mainly small details and what to pack. After a couple more designer runs, we have a few days off, where Heidi and I plan to visit MoMA, watch more Doctor Who, play video games, and share some romantic dates. Saturday evening, I'm invited to one of the last rehearsals for the musical she's been working on the past three months, still in developmental stages. Then, I have to pack the next month of my life into a suitcase and hop on a Kentucky-bound airplane. Excitement!
I'm planning out some new posts specific to Little Women coming in the next few weeks, but until then, be sure to check out littlewomentour.com for tickets and official tour information. See you next week!
And scene.
